Battle of Tannenberg (1914)

SOME FRUITS OF WAR 125

Of dozens of convalescing wounded soldiers talked to, all but one expressed their eagerness to get back to the front. There was no false enthusiasm about them; no pretense. You could not doubt their ear- nestness and sincerity. The expression of the face, tone of voice, above all the look from the eye, left no room for doubt. One soldier who had been shot in the leg at the battle of Tannenberg, said he was quite comfortable where he was — in the hospital. He would not be able to walk very well anyhow, he thought, and did not seem to regret it. He was the one exception.
